Both the Central men and women’s basketball teams had late leads but couldn’t hold onto them against Dubuque in Iowa Conference action on Saturday. The end of the women’s game was an almost carbon copy of the Wednesday win over Luther; Central was down by two, and with 40 seconds left, Courtney Kelderman was fouled on a three-point attempt. After making all three free throws, Dubuque took the ball down the court and scored in the paint to go up by one. The Dutch had an opportunity to tie or perhaps win the game, but a three-pointer from Kenzie Vander Molen sailed wide and the Spartans hung on to win 53 – 52. Vander Molen led all scorers with 19. The men had a nine-point lead at half and almost handed Dubuque their first loss of the season, but fell short, 74 – 67. Kevin Kaerwer had 17 points for Central, with help from a perfect night at the charity stripe, going 10-for-10. The Dutch women fall to 9 – 4 overall, while the men drop to 8 – 5, and they each are 1 – 1 in league play. Central faces Wartburg on the road next this Wednesday.
