For the first time in over a month, both of Central’s basketball teams tasted defeat on the same night on Saturday. The Dutch women fell in the closing seconds to Wartburg, 54 – 51 in a match that stayed close throughout. It was a one-point game at the half, and Kenzie Vander Molen had a chance to tie with a last second three, but her shot was off the mark. Rachel Evans recorded 13 points to lead the way for the Dutch who finish their season 11 – 14 overall. Central’s men fell for just the first time in ten games in their bout with the Knights, 86 – 83 in overtime. The Dutch were trailing by as much as 13 in the second half before storming back to tie with a late free throw by Matt Greenfield, but gave up a 7 – 0 run in the extra five minute period to seal their fate. Senior Matt Greenfield scored 24 points and grabbed ten rebounds for Central, while freshman Colby Taylor went 22 and nine, respectively. Central drops to 18 – 7 overall and will begin their journey towards an NCAA tournament berth with the conference tournament which starts this Thursday at home against either Buena Vista or Simpson.
