A slow second half after a fairly strong first twenty minutes doomed the Central women’s basketball team on Saturday afternoon. The Dutch dropped 68 – 53 to Dubuque, but hung tight most of the way. Central went 7-of-14 from beyond the arc in the first half but failed to hit any of their ten attempts in the second. Kelderman and Evans each scored 11 points to lead Central’s attack. The Dutch men came back from a late ten-point deficit to topple the Spartans and take first place in the conference to themselves, 80 – 74. The Dutch had the opposite problem of their female counterparts; they shot 30% in the first half and trailed 34 – 28 at the break, but came out and shot a scorching 47% to hold on late. Matt Greenfield made another case to be Iowa Conference player of the week with a 30 point, 14 rebound effort to lead the way for Central. The Dutch women drop to 10 – 13 overall and 2 – 10 in the conference, while the men improve to 17 – 6 and 10 – 2. One last road trip awaits Central this Wednesday against Luther in Decorah.
