They were stingy throughout, but Pella finally broke past Washington in the end in last night’s 85 – 58 Class 3A boys’ district basketball first round contest. Pella started with an 8 – 0 lead and built that up to a 24 – 9 first quarter advantage. However, Daryn Sebelius for the Demons wouldn’t let his team go down without a fight, and scored 21 points, 12 of which came on four straight three-pointers in the third quarter to keep his team within eight, before Pella pulled away for good later on in the period. Coach Mark Core says that the Demons’ football instincts kicked in when they got down early. Isaac Naaktgeboren had another monster night with 30 points and Bryce Bortscheller grabbed nine rebounds to go along with 26 points for the Little Dutch, who move on to play Grinnell once again in the district finals this Thursday in Newton.
