In what has become commonplace over the last six weeks, the Pella High basketball teams completed a sweep of Newton last night to wrap up second place in the Little Hawkeye Conference this season. The Lady Dutch won 54 – 46, but it was not easy for them. The Cardinals led 17 – 8 after the first period before Pella got back in the game with a 9 – 0 run to begin the second frame before securing the victory in the second half. Mackenzie Gustafson had 20 points and eight rebounds to lead the way for Pella. A very physical boys’ game went Pella’s way early and often, and the duo of Isaac Naaktgeboren and Jordan Pingel almost outscored Newton in the Little Dutch’s 86 – 60 victory. Naaktgeboren had 31 points and Pingel dumped in 24. The Little Dutch improve to 17 – 3, and the Lady Dutch end their regular season 15 – 6. Pella’s boys are off until Tuesday to play Centerville on the road, and Pella’s girls are at home on Wednesday for the first round of the Class 4A regional tournament.
