The political unrest in the Ukraine has a local impact. Alla Arbogast, who owns Alla’s, a hair salon in Knoxville, is a Ukraine native. Arbogast explains that the violence there now inflames a crisis that started in November, when the country’s president reversed a decision to sign a trade deal with the European Union, and instead turned to Russia. She said the Ukraine has been divided between historic loyalties to Europe and Russia for many years. She says there are two sides to the story; and she is concerned that both sides are not being portrayed accurately in the US. She says the east and west are highly divided on whether or not to accept assistance from Russia. She is concerned about the residents of her home country, as the unrest continues, and more citizens are killed. Alla says her oldest son still lives there, and is an engineer for the Ukrainian public transit system.
