It was another day in Tucson and another pair of shutout victories for the 4th-ranked Central College softball team on Sunday. The Dutch started the day against Denison of Ohio, and slugged out a 12-0 victory in five innings. Katie Canney led off the scoring with a two-run homer in the second, and Karlee Rock added a bases-loaded double in the third to make it 5-0. In the fourth, Central used three infield singles, two walks, two hit batters and a critical Big Red error to erupt for seven runs and put the game out of reach. Junior All-American pitcher Mallory Schulenberg earned the victory with five innings of one-hit ball. In game two, the Dutch needed the full seven innings, but put away Marian of Wisconsin for the second straight day, this time 6-0. Canney’s two-run single and a Whitney Sowers solo home run backed Trisha Smith’s complete-game one-hitter, which was Central’s sixth straight shutout as they’ve opened the season 6-0. The schedule becomes more difficult on Monday, as the Dutch will play Wisconsin-La Crosse at 3:30 Iowa time before battling highly-regarded Claremont-Mudd-Scripps. That game was originally listed as an early start, but the actual start time is 8:00 tonight Iowa time. You can hear a live audio stream of the Central – Claremont game at 8:00 tonight on www.kniakrls.com. Central’s baseball also stayed hot, winning in dominating fashion over Augsburg of Minnesota, 10 – 2. The Dutch used a seven-run fourth to break the game open. Judson McKown allowed just two runs and scattered seven hits over six innings of work. D-H, Robbie Rushing, was one of several Central players with a multi-hit game, getting three knocks and driving in three runs. Central’s men are 5 – 2 overall, and are off today before playing Crown on Tuesday at 1:00 p.m. Pacific Time.
