Errors in game one, and late-inning heroics in game two fueled a doubleheader sweep for Dubuque over Central in the Iowa Conference baseball opener for both squads. Central committed three errors in the first two innings, which led to three unearned runs in game one. The Dutch would climb back in but fall 6 – 4 in seven frames. Jordan Judkins went 3-for-4 at the plate with an RBI. In game two, lefty Ryan Dusil fell into a quick 5 – 0 hole on hot hitting by the Spartans, but Central would tie it up by batting around in the fourth to score five runs. The Dutch took their first lead of the afternoon with a two-run sixth, but failed to hang on in an 8 – 7 loss. Austin McWhite had the game-tying two-run double in the seventh for the Spartans, took third on a wild pitch, then scored on a suicide squeeze bunt which ended up being the difference. Judkins and Jake Effron were each 2-for-4 with two RBI’s in the game, as Central falls to 8 – 5 overall and 0 – 2 in the league. The two teams will play the final two games of the series today starting at noon in Dubuque.
