Central Upset Bid Falls Just Short

The clock finally struck midnight for the Central men’s basketball team’s Cinderella run they called a 2013-14 season. One final second half push was not quite enough for the them, as they fell to the number-one ranked University of Wisconsin – Stevens Point in the second round of the NCAA Division III tournament on Saturday, 76 – 71. The Pointers were a physical team whose physicality the Dutch couldn’t match; Central attempted eight free throws on the night, while senior Pointer, Clayton Heuer made more than the Dutch attempted. The senior went 9-for-12 at the line and the team was 18-for-28 in the game. The Dutch trailed by 15 with just over ten minutes left in the game, when Central started to dig in and push back to get within two. They had the ball, and twice couldn’t hit a shot to tie or give them the lead. Coach Craig Douma said after the game the Pointers deserve a lot of credit, but so does his team. The Pointers scored 15 points off Central turnovers and had 22 second chance points while out-rebounding the Dutch on the offensive glass, 19 – 8. Matt Greenfield finished his career with another double-double, scoring 18 points and grabbing 13 rebounds, and Colby Taylor had 17 points. Central finished the season 21 – 8 and lose five seniors off their team.
