As if it were any surprise, three members of the Central basketball program were recognized in the Iowa Conference for their accomplishments in the 2013-14 season. Matt Greenfield of the Central men’s basketball team was named the league’s most valuable player. He averaged nearly a double-double with 19 points and 9.9 rebounds per game and recorded 13 double-double’s over the course of the year. The senior also notched his 1,000th point in Central’s win over Luther on Saturday in the league tournament championship. After leading the Dutch men from last place to first place in the conference, Coach Craig Douma was named Iowa Conference coach of the year. Douma’s the first Central coach since Mike Boschee in 2010 to win the honor, and only the third different coach. On the women’s side, Kenzie Vander Molen was named to the Iowa Conference first team. She’s the first player to make it to that team since Laura Porter in 2007. The junior finished with over 16 points per game on average along with three assists per contest, both of which were good enough for second best in the league. Central’s men are off to Wisconsin this morning to get ready for their NCAA Division III National Tournament appearance on Friday; they take off at 8:00 a.m. today, and there will be a send-off for the team at 7:45 if you’re wanting to wish the team well before they take off for America’s Dairyland.
