Knoxville’s Sidewalks A Discussion Point At This Week’s Council Meeting

At Knoxville’s City Council meeting this week, a point of concern addressed was an unfinished sidewalk repair project that began in 2003. City Manager Harold Stewart says the project end date was December 31, 2013, and the budgeted funds for the project, which include money from the Local Option Sales Tax, have been depleted. He says part of the reason for this is because of increased federal requirements for handicap accessible ramps from the walks to the streets increased the cost of the work by about 50%. Stewart says in recent years, the city has budgeted for sidewalk repair, and, at the direction of the Council following this meeting, his staff will get estimates for completion of the project.
