The season continues for the Central men’s basketball team. The Dutch stormed out to a huge lead and never trailed in an 85 – 72 defeat of St. Olaf of Minnesota on Friday night. Central raced out to an 18 – 8 lead, going 7-for-8 from the field and 4-for-4 from the perimeter. The Dutch would build on that and lead 45 – 28 at the break and increase the advantage to 21 in the second 20 minutes before the Oles’ Sterling Nielsen took matters into his own hands, scoring 22 of his 26 points in that second half to help bring his team back within four. However, another Central push would knock the lead back up to double digits and Central held on for the victory. St. Olaf was a very physical rebounding team during the season, but got out-rebounded by the Dutch 43 – 29 in the contest. Four starters from Central found double figures, led by Kevin Kaerwer who had a game-high 27 points; Matt Greenfield had a double-double with 16 points and 13 rebounds, while Spencer Bakerink had a career-high night with 12 points and eight rebounds. The Dutch improve to 21 – 7 on the year and they will play the number one team in the country, the University of Wisconsin – Stevens Point tonight for a trip to the Sweet 16 next week. You can hear tonight’s second round game live on AM 1320 and FM 95.3 KNIA and KNIAKRLS.com with Cory Houser on the call. Pregame coverage begins at 6:45 p.m. with tip-off at seven.
