One big reason Central’s baseball team was able to have so much success down the stretch this year was because of the play of their defense. The team as a whole had a .968 fielding percentage, a whopping 22 points better than their opponents. For the ENTIRE season. Grant Seuferer led the team with 289 putouts and still had a .990 fielding percentage. Coach Adam Stevens says that the main reason for the disparity in the numbers is that his pitchers did not strike a lot of batters out; they were more pitch-to-contact, and they had the defense to back them up. Stevens says a big gold star can be given to the second baseman and shortstop. Central finished 28 – 16 overall, 17 – 11 in the conference and were runners-up in the Iowa Conference tournament last weekend.
