Three outs away from a victory in round one of the Iowa Conference tournament, the Central softball team gave up five runs in the seventh inning to Buena Vista and fell 7 – 4. The Dutch were up 4 – 2 going into the top of the inning, when pitcher Trisha Smith struck out the leadoff batter, but a dropped third strike and a subsequent throwing error sent the snowball rolling out of control. Annie Sarcone and Karlee Rock each homered for Central in the first inning to get them out to a 3 – 0 lead, but could only tack on an extra run in the third. Central falls to 30 – 9 overall and they will be forced to win three games today in order to vie for a conference championship tomorrow. They’ll start with a game against Dubuque at 10:00 a.m., and you can hear that contest live on, with Trevor Castle on the play-by-play.
