The Iowa Conference baseball tournament opens up play today in Cedar Rapids with a trip to the NCAA Division III National Tournament on the line. Central closed the regular season winning 14 of their last 18 contests and did not lose any of their last five series. In round one, the Dutch will play sixth-seeded Coe, a team they swept roughly three weeks ago. Central has turned their season around after being swept in four, one-run games at the hands of number-18 ranked Buena Vista in early April. Those one-run contests have went Central’s way more often than not; since the series with the Beavers, the Dutch are 5 – 1 in games decided by just one run. Coach Adam Stevens says that he’s happy with the improvements, but with the increase in temperatures, those close games could turn into heavyweight boxing matches. Should the severe weather stay away, Central is scheduled to play Coe at 1:00 p.m. If the Dutch win, they will play Wartburg at 4:00 p.m. A loss sends them to the losers bracket tomorrow to play either Loras or Simpson at 10:00 a.m.
