A pair of strange circumstances led to a sweep of Newton by the Pella High boys’ and girls’ soccer teams last night. The Little Dutch got up 2 – 1 on the Cardinals, before a lightning delay with 15 minutes left in the second half put a hold on the game. With conditions not improving, the game was called with Pella on top by a score of 2 – 1. Will Warner and Seth Johnson each scored for the Little Dutch, who improve to 12 – 5 – 1 overall. They’ll play Nevada tomorrow night. The Lady Dutch played a strong second half, lost a late lead, and had to win in dramatic fashion in penalty kicks, 3 – 2. Pella scored in their first three attempts in the shootout, before Newton scored in the third and fourth rounds. A diving save by Jeannie Etnyre preserved the victory. Fighting through his team’s celebratory screams, Coach Mark Howard said it was a back and forth contest. Howard adds that despite this being their first overtime game of the season, they were prepared for the situation. The Lady Dutch are now 10 – 4 on the year and will play Ankeny Centennial tomorrow night.
