A day a month-and-a-half in the making, our area high school track and field teams will compete in their biggest meet of the season tonight. It’s the state qualifying meet, and everyone gets one last chance to qualify to compete on the famous “Blue Oval” of Drake Stadium. Carving up their opponents all year long, the Pella High girls’ track team has lofty goals entering the track “postseason” and Coach Dak Rasmussen has high hopes for tonight’s meet. PCM and Pella Christian’s boys and girls will be at the same state qualifying site, and Eagles’ girls’ coach, Kevin Herdegen says there will be plenty of other challenging schools in attendance. Pleasantville, Melcher-Dallas, and Twin Cedars will all be at B-G-M for their Class 1A meet. The top two times in each event will qualify for state, and then the top eight times not in the top two out of all state qualifying sites will also qualify as “wild cards” for next week’s state track meet in Des Moines. Events are scheduled to start at 4:00 p.m.
