It was a nail-biter, but the Central women’s basketball team began their 2014-15 campaign with a two-point win over Grinnell on Saturday, 52 – 50. The Dutch trailed by six at intermission, but wound up on the positive side of an offensively-challenged second half, as the teams combined to score just 36 points, 22 of which came from Central. Rachel Evans was the leading scorer for the Dutch, knocking in 13 off the bench, while Kenzie Vander Molen and Tina Lane each had 11. Back in Pella, the Central men’s basketball team set a school record in points scored in a 132 – 118 win over Nebraska Wesleyan on Saturday. The previous high was 124 against Coe back in December of 1991. The score was 62 – 60 in favor of the Dutch at the half, and Central’s 70 in the final 20 minutes is also a school record, which was previous 67 against Iowa Wesleyan in January of 1991. Six players found the double digits in the score column, three of them with over 20. Aaron Rosenstiel led the way with a double-double effort of 26 points and 11 rebounds, Kyle Newendorp had 21 and 13, and Nile Eckermann scored 22 for the Dutch. Both of Central’s teams are 1 – 0 on the year, and the men will play Missouri Baptist in St. Louis on Tuesday, while the women come home for the first time on Friday against Blackburn.
