Wild might be the best way to sum up Friday night’s action inside the Tulip City when the Pella girls and boys’ basketball squads split a doubleheader against the Grinnell Tigers heard on 92.1 KRLS. The girls were able to score 49 points in the second half to come back from a 13-point deficit at halftime to win 68-66. Katie Vander Molen dropped 23 points and collected ten boards for the double-double in the effort. Girls Head Coach Jerod Garland says he’s proud of the effort his girls put out to come back to win in the fourth quarter. The boys game followed a similar story, with an even closer finish. Trailing by as much as nine points with less than two minutes to go, it was a pair of three-balls, one by Ryan Van Wyk and one by Payson Vande Lune, that tied it up with 18 seconds remaining. However, the Little Dutch lost 73-72 to fall to 2-2, despite having the ball on the last possession with over eight seconds left. Isaac Naaktgeboren led all scorers with 39 points. Both teams have a quick turnaround as they take on Fairfield in Pella today, with the doubleheader starting at 1:30 p.m.
