There was some cold shooting and hot shooting from the Pella Christian basketball teams in their doubleheader with Newton last night. Unfortunately, the former was on the side of the lady Eagles, as they fell, 64 – 50. The Eagles scored just 14 first half points while allowing 27 and committing several turnovers themselves. Brooke Mitrisin did most of her damage at the free throw line, scoring 14 points while shooting 10-of-14 from the charity stripe. Pella Christian’s boys hit their first five field goals for 14 points but had to survive a late Cardinal push to win 74 – 67. The Eagles were up 19 – 6 after one and fell behind by five in the third quarter before coming back to take charge the rest of the way, including a 25-point fourth period. Coach Larry Hessing says he was proud of the mental toughness of his team. Four players had double figures in the scoring column, led by Levi Jungling’s 19. Brent Vermeer and David Kacmarynski each had 17 and Josh Posthuma threw in 13. The Eagles’ girls are now 2 – 1 while the boys are 3 – 0. Each team is off until Monday for a big non-conference home doubleheader with PCM.
