Three critical free throws by Wartburg sunk the Central women’s basketball team on Saturday, 56 – 54. The Dutch stayed close throughout the contest with the Knights, and had a one-point lead with 18 seconds left, until Kenzie Vander Molen grazed the hand of Kristie Sommer on a corner three to draw the whistle. Central was unable to score on their next possession. Mariah Swartzentruber had 18 points and Rachel Evans scored ten, as Central finishes their 2014-15 season with a 10 – 15 record. They lose five seniors from their varsity squad. Central’s men withstood an early second half push by the Knights and prevailed, 68 – 56, despite going 3-for-27 from beyond the arc and 0-for-9 in the final 20 minutes. The Dutch “D” held Wartburg to just 30% shooting for the game. Colby Taylor turned in his ninth double-double of the season with 11 points and 12 rebounds, while Kyle Newendorp had 11 and ten, respectively. Central is on a five-game winning streak entering the league tournament, with a mark of 15 – 10. They host these very same Knights this Tuesday in the first round of the Iowa Conference tournament.
