The Pella Christian Eagles pulled off the upset and are moving on in the Class 2A State Basketball Tournament after their 70-69 victory over Western Christian, as heard live on 92.1 KRLS. The Eagles came out on fire against the defending champs, draining seven three point shots in the first quarter of the game, with their biggest lead coming at 23-9 after the opening period. Assistant Coach Marv Van Wyk says his team came out with a great deal of confidence and didn’t show any nerves throughout the battle. The game then turned to the paint, with both teams earning some big shots underneath the hoop. Josh Van Lingen of the Wolfpack caught fire in the 2nd half, and didn’t look back, dropping 31 points. David Kacmarynski led the way with 15 for the Eagles. He says they’ve been overcoming bigger teams all season long, and says they continue to improve despite a distinct size disadvantage. Clutch free throw shooting clinched it for Pella Christian, as they made 14 of 16 in the second half. Coach Van Wyk says the team has made vast improvements in their charity stripe work. The Eagles will now face number six seed Iowa City Regina, who upset Cascade 45-32. The game is set for tip-off on Thursday at 3:45 back at Wells Fargo Arena.
