The Iowa House Republicans have released their spending targets for this year’s budget.
They have submitted a total of $7.175 billion, which is less than the over $7.3 billion proposed by Senate Democrats and Governor Terry Branstad. State Representative Guy Vander Linden says that budget projections have declined significantly according to the most recent March numbers, which reflects the gap between the chambers. He says spending cuts are necessary, and will hit most departments in the state, with the exception of property tax backfill and state supplemental aid for schools if a number can be agreed upon. Vander Linden says this gap between parties will likely cause this session to drag on well past the scheduled last day on May 1st.
