Pella High School students are learning about the field of criminal justice with hands on learning.
This week, the class learned about Sarge, the Monroe Police Department’s drug search dog. Students Aleasha Reed and Aletta Verhey say a few things surprised them about Sarge’s visit.
“I would say that the appearance of the dog was surprising. I was expecting a large German Shepherd, and but it was a short black lab, and I wasn’t expecting that at all,” Reed says.
They are both considering criminal justice related studies after high school. Monroe Police Chief Nick Chambers says that these types of demonstrations expose the community and those interested in pursuing work in law enforcement to what they do on a day-to-day basis.
“Getting anybody interested in law enforcement is a vital part as to why I’m here,” Chambers says.
The black lab helps with calls in Pella, Monroe, Prairie City, and much of Jasper County.
