The official beginning of the Drake Relays was yesterday, but today, the high school athletes will get their first chance to show off in front of a packed Drake Stadium in Des Moines. Two field event performers will kick-off the festivities for our local schools. In the afternoon session, Lexi Reynolds will participate in the discus. Her season-best throw was at the Newton meet, where she threw 124′ 8.5″ last Thursday. That ranks 21st in the state and sixth best in Class 3A. Garrett Jansen, who has already broken school records in both the shot put and the discus, will take the former into the limelight today. His shot put throw of 53′ 6″ is 13th in the state, and fourth in Class 3A. The discus throw for the girls is set to begin at 3:00 p.m., and the boys’ shot put starts at 3:30.
