The 19th-ranked Central College softball team earned a huge doubleheader sweep of number 10 Simpson in the opening Iowa Conference doubleheader last night in Indianola. Central trailed 8-4 after just two innings in the opener before rallying to win 11-10. In the nightcap, they never trailed, and used a seven run seventh to pull away for a 16-7 victory. Coach George Wares says that last night’s atmosphere is what the Central – Simpson rivalry is all about. Game one was tied at nine going into the seventh when Central scored twice to take the lead. Simpson hit the first pitch in the bottom of the inning for a home run, then loaded the bases before Mallory Scheulenberg closed the door. Scheulenberg was the starter in both games, but was relieved by Trisha Smith each time, and Smith earned a pair of wins while Scheulenberg re-entered each game to earn her first two saves of the year. Karlee Rock hit three home runs on the day to give her 10 on the season, and Abby Voas added a grand slam in game two. Central is 21-6 on the season, and starts Iowa Conference play at 2-0, with another twin bill coming on Saturday at Wartburg. We’ll have that doubleheader live on 92.1 KRLS
