A day full of strange happenings in the Tulip City occurred on Saturday on the baseball diamonds when Central and Loras concluded the regular season. Though the final scores were the same from Friday’s doubleheader, the way they got to them was completely different. In game one, both starting pitchers, Dylan Diveney for Central and Alex Steines for Loras, settled in early with very little offense from both clubs. However, the Dutch freshman allowed his first hit with two outs in the tenth inning, and Central took advantage of miscues and a walk-off balk by Steines to get the 1 – 0 win. The Dutch had a 3 – 0 lead going into the seventh of game two, but Loras scored four times on four hits and two errors to take the lead. But Central did not go down without swinging; Zach Zylstra hit a game-tying double, and then Noah Stochl tried to advance Kyle Gritsch from second with a bunt, but the throw was wild, and Central walked off again with a 5 – 4 victory. The Dutch will be the number three seed in the Iowa Conference tournament, which begins on Thursday.
