The drive for five. One for the thumb. Whatever tee-shirt catchphrase you want to use, Central College begins its quest for a fifth softball national championship this afternoon with an NCAA regional game against Gustavus of Minnesota. The 13th-ranked Dutch are fresh off of an Iowa Conference tournament championship and are making their 7th consecutive postseason appearance. Today’s opponents, the Golden Gusties, are in the field for the first time since 2009 after winning the Minnesota Conference tournament last weekend. Hall of Fame Central Coach George Wares is in the dance for an NCAA record 27th time, and is expecting a barn-burner today. The Dutch swept Gustavus during the regular season, earning 5-3 and 9-5 victories in Pella back on March 27th. Today’s game is scheduled to start at 3:30, and is the second game of a doubleheader, following a contest between Aurora of Illinois and Fontbonne of Missouri. You can hear every pitch of the Central versus Gustavus game live on 92.1 KRLS and www.kniakrls.com with Trevor Castle on the play-by-play. Our PellaMotors.com Radio Pregame Show will hit the air at 3:15.
