Four local high school track and field teams had a total of six individual events that took home state championships at Drake Stadium in Des Moines.
Knoxville High School brought home three, including two from senior discus and shotput thrower Nathan Winters.
“I started throwing in second or third grade, and people would probably say ‘that’s crazy,’ and they’re probably right,” Winters said. “But look where it’s put me at…all of the hard work has finally paid off.”
Panthers Senior Tanner Dunkin once again won the 100 meter dash. Rachel Peter from PCM won the 1500 meter run, her first medal after qualifying each of the past four years.
“Right after I finished, I actually had to ask the starter, ‘wait, did I win?” Peter told KNIA/KRLS. “It still hasn’t even set in yet. I never pictured myself as a State Champion, but here I am.”
The Pella girls 4×400 meter relay team and the Pleasantville boys 4×100 meter relay team earned first place in their races.
