Warning: Cliche sports-attention-grabbing-sentence-contrasting-the-temperature-with-the-performances-on-the-field ahead. It may have been cold outside, but the results were hot for the Pella High boys’ and girls’ track and field teams last night at their regular season finale home meet. The Little Dutch won with 179 points, besting Oskaloosa by almost 54. Garret Jansen set two new school records in the shot put and the discus, and Chase Van Sant out-jumped the competition by over four feet with another school record to win the long jump.
Also on the boys’ side, Nathan Winters broke his dad’s Knoxville High School mark in the shot put by throwing 57′ 3.5″ to win that event. Connor Bailey and Nolan Wallace went 2-3 in the 100 meter dash, respectively.
Pella Christian’s boys were tied with the Panthers for fifth with 68 points. Jacob Lensing was third in the 1600 and 3200 for the Eagles.
The Pella High girls resoundingly won the meet with 212 points, beating Grinnell by 62.5. Lydia VanEe and Corin McKinstrey went gold-silver in the 100 meter hurdles, and VanEe and Kiki Pingel did the same thing in the 400 hurdles. The Lady Dutch also were victorious in all relay events, except for the 4 x 800.
PC’s girls finished sixth; the Eagles’ 4 x 200 meter relay team was second, and Miranda Nikkel took home the bronze in the shot put.
Kendrea Richardson led the charge for the Panther girls, with a second place line-crossing in the 200, and Knoxville was runner-up in the sprint medley relay.
