Needing one win Saturday at the Iowa Conference tournament to feel secure with its NCAA postseason resume, the Central College softball team took away all doubt by sweeping Dubuque and Luther to win the IIAC championship and the league’s automatic berth into the 62-team national field. The second-seeded Dutch beat the Spartans 7-1 before posting an 8-2 win over the top-seeded host Norse. For Coach George Wares, it eliminated what would have been a couple of sleepless nights on the bubble, and also has him feeling great about the way his team is playing heading into the postseason. In that win over Luther, Central’s Karlee Rock was 3-4 with a double, her school record 14th home-run, and 3 RBI, giving her another school record with 53. Mallory Scheulenberg got the win, scattering three hits over seven innings, after she pitched the final two innings in the win over Dubuque to earn her second save of the season. Central is 30-9, and they’ll learn their postseason assignment today. Regional action starts Friday across the country, and you’ll be able to hear all of the Central action on KNIA/KRLS and www.kniakrls.com.
