Scoreless through four innings, Pleasantville’s baseball team finally broke through with a run in the fifth inning and eventually went on to shutout Pella Christian last night, 3 – 0, in a game heard live on 92.1 KRLS. Starters Jesse Nichols and Dillon Branderhorst settled in early, and each pitched out of various jams, though the former took a hard luck loss, striking out four in five innings of work and giving up one run on three hits. Cassin Garr scored two of the runs for the Trojans and went 2-for-3 at the plate. Clay Stravers for the Eagles was 1-for-3 with a stolen base. PC baseball falls to 2 – 2 on the season, and the Trojans are now 4 – 1. The Eagles will play Newton on Wednesday, while Pleasantville has a game at Martensdale – St. Mary’s later tonight. The Pella Christian Eagles softball team kept their perfect season alive despite a big challenge from the short-staffed Pleasantville Trojans with a 4-1 win. Eagles’ Sophomore Emma Schnell gave up the team’s first run of the 2015 campaign on a controversial play at home plate following a Paige Busick double, but was otherwise dominant, striking out 12 Trojans. Pella Christian Head Coach Karen Harill says the team was able to overcome what she called an off-night for her squad.
Pleasantville coach Robert Friday says that he was extremely pleased with how competitive they played, despite the fact that they were missing four starters due to the state golf meet. Both teams will play again tonight, as Pella Christian continues a three-game home stretch with rival Albia and the Trojans will travel to face conference foe Martensdale-St. Mary’s.
