Rainfall totals from June 24-25 flooding event

According to the National Weather Service, the June 25th flooding event was among the most significant ever recorded by their office.

Hydrologist Jeff Zogg tells KNIA/KRLS News that the amount of rain that fell along the Des Moines and Raccoon River basins in a 12 hour span was a very rare event. He says the 8 to 10 inches of rain that fell in parts of Marion County typically have a less than 2% chance of happening in any given year. Zogg says the risk for flooding is declining because of the amount of vegetation growing this time of year, which helps rapidly dry out soil.
