When Pella High returns to the state baseball tournament tonight for the first time since their runner-up finish in 1997, a familiar opponent will be waiting on the other side. The top-ranked and second-seeded Little Dutch will battle Little Hawkeye Conference rival and number seven seed Dallas Center Grimes tonight at 7:30 at Principal Park in Des Moines. The evening’s menu features a tasty pitching matchup, with Pella sending ace Grant Judkins to the bump opposite D-C-G’s Cole Baker. Baker no-hit the Little Dutch in last year’s sub-state game, but Pella coach Jesse Jablonski says that they’ve fared better against him this season. While the Little Dutch beat Baker and the Mustangs once this season, D-C-G swept a doubleheader in Dallas Center, giving Pella half of it’s season total of losses on the season in just one day. The green and white are 33-4 overall, and have won their last 13 games. The Mustangs are 21-13 on the season, but have won 13 of their last 15 after starting the season just 8-11. First pitch tonight at Principal Park is scheduled for 7:30, but weather has already wreaked havoc with the state tournament schedule, and it’s the fifth of five games on the slate, so keep it tuned to KNIA & KRLS for potential timing changes. Trevor Castle and Marcus Johnson will be on the call, with first pitch about 20 minutes before game time on 92.1 KRLS and KNIA/KRLS dot com.
