This month’s rainfall broke a long-standing record in Marion County.

According to the National Weather Service, 13.33 inches of rain has fallen at their reporting station in Knoxville, which makes it the wettest month of July ever recorded. The previous high mark was set during the historic floods of 1993, in which 13.32 inches fell.

National Weather Service Hydrologist Jeff Zogg tells KNIA/KRLS News that the scope of Monday’s and Tuesday’s rain events are very rare, but have now occurred three times in Marion County over the past two months.

“Typically, these rainfall amounts we’re seeing over a 24 hour period happen on average once every thirty to fifty years,” Zogg says.

It has been significantly drier in the northern part of the county, with only 5.8 inches recorded in Pella at our KNIA/KRLS studios on the Molengracht.

The monthly normal in July for Marion County is 4.8 inches. Currently, no additional precipitation is in the forecast through Saturday afternoon.
