A big test is coming up for the first year baseball program of the Melcher-Dallas Saints as they will travel to Pleasantville to play the Trojans in the opening round of the Class 1A District 12 playoffs tonight. The Saints have struggled this season, but a ray of hope glimmers for the program’s future; no player on their roster is older than a sophomore and includes six eighth-graders. Pleasantville, on the other hand, still smarting from being knocked out last year in the district final on a walk-off home run by Twin Cedars, will treat this game as they would any opponent. Despite being the huge favorite on paper, Pleasantville Head Coach Sheldon Card will not take tonight’s game lightly. Pleasantville was granted the number one seed in District 12, and will host the top half of the bracket at their home field. However, Twin Cedars, the Class 1A State Champion from last year, is the number two seed and will host their half of the bracket and then will host the district final as well, setting up a possible rematch of last year’s district final. The winner of tonight’s Melcher-Dallas/Pleasantville game will play on Thursday against the winner of Moravia and Wayne.
