It took awhile to adjust to some better-than-expected pitching, but Pella High baseball took care of business against a one-win Fort Madison team on Friday night, 6 – 0, in the Class 3A district tournament opening round. Tanner Wood allowed a two-out single in the first and second frames, but settled down from there, locating his curveball and threw no-hit ball the final four frames he was on the hill. Offensively, after the Dutch left the bases loaded with one out in the second, they scored two runs in the fourth, fifth, and sixth innings, with the big blows being a run-scoring triple from Avery Van Zee, and a two-run base knock by Tyler Hillman. Coach Jesse Jablonski says the guys started to see the ball better out of Billy Coppage’s hands the second time through the line-up, but will need to speed up their adjustments moving forward. Wood struck out ten batters, and Hillman came in and pitched a 1-2-3 seventh to secure the victory. Pella improves to 31 – 4 on the year, and they advance to Monday to take on Fairfield, who beat Keokuk, 9 – 5 in their round one game. You can hear that game on 92.1 KRLS with the first pitch at 7:00 p.m.
