The silhouette of a soldier kneeling in front of a grave marker shaped like a cross that was removed from the Knoxville VA late last week has been put back up after being altered.

Bart Quick, Chief of Voluntary Service and Community Outreach at the VA in Des Moines said the silhouette honoring fallen soldiers was removed because of protocol. The silhouette is now back with a tombstone replacing the cross-shaped grave marker.

A similar piece of art nearby at Knoxville’s Freedom Rock has been the subject of controversy after a citizen and the group, Americans United for the Separation of Church and State, demanded the city remove it because the image of the cross on city property violated the First Amendment Establishment Clause.
