Private properties suffered more damage from Tuesday’s severe weather than from previous storms that have struck Marion County this year.

Marion County Emergency Management Coordinator Jeff Anderson estimates about 200 homes have been impacted with some degree of flood damage and that number could grow. Anyone with damage due to flooding is asked to document the damage and report it as soon as possible.

Reporting information is available below:

Marion County residents whose homes or business’ suffered damage as a result of the severe weather and flooding that occurred on/after July 26th should report the damage to the Marion County Emergency Management office at 641-828-2256 (leave a message containing the information), or via email to janderson@co.marion.ia.us as soon as possible. Residents are encouraged to document damages by taking notes and pictures (even if items are destroyed and thrown away).

To make a report, please have the following information:
-your name
-your phone number
-the address of the damaged home/business
-the type of damage (basement flooding; home flooded;
-the extent of the damage (amount of water in basement; amount of water on main floor)
-do you have insurance that will cover any of the damage
-the number of adults and children living in the home

Marion County Emergency Management will compile the damage information and submit a total to Iowa Homeland Security and Emergency Management.
It is very important to submit any damage information as soon as possible so that the information can be passed along to IHSEMD.
Marion County has declared a local emergency as of July 29th, 2015 for damage to public infrastructure such as roads and bridges. The declaration will allow the Iowa Individual Assistance Program to be activated for Marion County residents (who qualify based on income) who sustained damages. Additional information regarding this program will be available on our Facebook page here as it becomes available.

Because of the severity of this storm and the significant impact on private dwellings, the Marion County Emergency Management Commission has formally requested assistance through Iowa Homeland Security & Emergency Management (HSEMD), of the Southern Baptist Association to assist property owners with cleaning up flood damages inside their residences.

This group of volunteers will assist property owners (with the owner’s permission) with “mudding out”. The typical operation for the mud-out teams is:

1. Take out all debris from the basement (mud and furniture)
2. Remove damaged particle board or sheetrock (at least 12” above wicking line)
3. Power wash all walls and floor
4. Apply Shockwave to walls and floor

These services are provided by volunteers, at no cost to the resident. If you need this type of assistance, please call 641-828-2256 as soon as possible to be placed on the list. The Southern Baptist Association has resources across the U.S. placed on stand-by. The number of requests for assistance will determine how many of those resources are brought to Marion County.
