Up against challenging competitors, the Pella High volleyball team still held their own and went 4 – 2 during their stay at the Bondurant-Farrar tournament this weekend. Pella endured a straight-set loss to Class 5A, No. 10-ranked West Des Moines Valley, 10 – 21 and 16 – 21. The Lady Dutch then swept West Marshall, 21 – 16 and 21 – 6; punched out Williamsburg, 21 – 13 and 21 – 11; and had a 21 – 12 and 24 – 22 defeat of Woodward-Granger. Pella had a pair of three-set games which they split, losing to Gilbert 21 – 16, 18 – 21, and 13 – 15, but prevailing over Des Moines Roosevelt, 18 – 21, 21 – 19, and 15 – 12. A kill efficiency of .294 and 37-for-40 serving helped the Dutch beat the Trojans of West Marshall. Emily Holterhaus continued to dazzle, leading the team with four kills, while Katie Vander Molen and Makenna Bogaard each chipped in three of their own. The Lady Dutch are now 5 – 2 this season, and they’ll make their home debut this Tuesday against Carlisle.
