Harlan scored three runs in the top of the 7th inning yesterday afternoon to stun Pella 6-5 in the semifinals of the class 3-A state baseball tournament in a game heard live on 92.1 KRLS. The Little Dutch led 5-3 entering the final frame, and it was 5-4 when Cyclone second baseman Brett Sears came to the plate with two outs and runners on second and third. He dumped a bloop single into short left field to give Harlan the lead, and then Pella went in order in the bottom of the seventh to see its season come to an end.

Pella senior righty Tanner Wood did not factor into the decision after working six solid innings on the mound. He struck out a career high 13 and allowed four runs on seven hits. After falling behind 1-0 in the second, Wood pitched the rest of the game with the lead as the Little Dutch tied it in the bottom of the second and took a 4-1 lead after three.

Marcus Wittmer, who earned seven saves during the regular season, was unable to close out number eight yesterday afternoon. He took the loss in relief, as Pella finishes its 2015 season with a 34-5 record. Grant Judkins was 3-of-4 at the plate with a triple and two runs scored, Tyler Hillman also scored twice on a 2-for-3 afternoon, and Landon Vander Leest and Avery Van Zee both contributed two hits as well. Harlan advances to the state championship game tonight against Waverly Shell Rock.
