This week is fire prevention week.

Pella Fire Chief Doug Van Gorkum urges all area residents to be prepared. He says to clean the chimneys of wood burning stoves and the filters on those furnances.

Van Gorkum recommends families go through a fire drill during the night time hours to make sure alarms are working and are loud enough to alert anyone sleeping.

“See if that smoke detector will actually wake them up in the middle of the night,” Van Gorkum knows. “I’d recommend practicing after they’ve gone to bed after a couple of hours and then set it off to see if they get up. If they don’t, they better be putting [a detector] close to them for safety.”

He says a good way to keep smoke and carbon monoxide detectors in good working order is to change batteries during daylight saving time in the spring and fall.
