Today is the Great American Smokeout and Marion County Public Health Tobacco Education and Prevention Coordinator Jess Clark wants to encourage smokers to think about ways to quit.

Last year, smokers made up 18 percent of the Marion County population. Clark says there’s a large number of students in Marion County middle schools who are using tobacco products, including vape pens and e-cigarettes.

Clark encourages smokers of all ages to go to the Quitline Iowa website or call 1-800-QUIT-NOW for smoking cessation tools and tips. The program is free. Students between the ages of 13 and 18 also can participate in the program for free and anonymously.
