Two unbeaten teams exited the tunnels of the UNI-Dome in Cedar Falls last night to a pair of raucous crowds, but it was Pella High who once again proved they are the best team in the state in Class 3A by holding off a speedy and impressive West Delaware team, 45 – 26, in the Class 3A state semifinals. Two plays into the game, Nick Finney picked off Max Ridenour, and the Little Dutch scored just three plays later. Noah Clayberg then added some extra help, and points, on defense later in the first half. Clayberg put up an 80-yard run to make it 24 – 7 at intermission. West Delaware kept fighting back, and got to within 11 late in the third quarter, but two more scores, including another 76-yard run from the Pella QB, put the game away for good. Noah finished with a massive 287 yards on 25 carries, four touchdowns, and another 129 through the air on 9-for-12 passing and a touchdown. Coach Jay McKinstrey immediately gave credit to the Hawks after the game, and says it was a shame one of the two teams had to lose in the semifinals. Pella is now 13 – 0, and they can repeat as Class 3A state champions next Thursday night if they can get by conference and district rival, Norwalk. The kick-off for that contest is slated for 7:06 p.m.
