Resting at 7 – 0 exactly one-third of the way through their schedule, the Pella High boys’ basketball team is sitting pretty atop the Class 3A rankings and the Little Hawkeye Conference. They’ve gotten there with their historically good defense, 50% shooting from the field, having the third best rebounding average in 3A, the most assists, and nearly ten steals per game. Coming off another state football championship, there are some Little Dutch hoops spectators that are surprised, but not surprised that the guys in green are doing as well as they are, because of the amount of athletes that comprise this season’s team. Head Coach Mark Core is one of them. Core mentions that you can always improve defensively, be more aggressive on the boards, and get better with offensive execution, and those are three of the areas they’ve focused on this week in practices and scrimmages. They’ll play one of the best teams in Class 4A, West Des Moines Valley, this Monday night to resume their season.
