After two rough losses to Wartburg on the road last Saturday, the Central men’s and women’s basketball teams promptly responded and swept Dubuque out of the P.H. Kuyper Gymnasium on Wednesday. The women trailed by as many as ten in the first quarter, but scored 50 points to the Spartans’ 31 in the middle two periods to win, 74 – 63. Emily Dine off the bench scored 31 points, including seven three-pointers. Central also forced 21 turnovers while only giving away a season-low ten themselves. The Dutch had 14 steals and 12 offensive boards. Claire Marburger added 20 points and Alison Malaby put in a dozen. Central’s men trailed by ten down the stretch against league-favorite Dubuque, but came back to defeat their opponents, 72 – 67. They won despite turning the ball over 16 times, which equated to 21 points off those turnovers by the Spartans. Austin Glawe led the team with 17 points, Austin Hauser scored 16, and Kyle Smith added 12. Junior Colby Taylor was held to just eight points and a team-high eight rebounds. Central’s men improve to 11 – 3 overall and 2 – 1 in the conference, while the women improve to 4 – 10 and are 1 – 2 in the league. They will rest up before a visit from Loras this Saturday, in a doubleheader you can hear live on 92.1 KRLS.
