There was no shortage of drama yesterday in the Pella Christian – Norwalk doubleheader to begin the 2016 portion of the season. Having just played a five-overtime game against them in the Tulip City last year, the Eagles and Warriors played extra basketball again, and it was Norwalk who ended up on top, 62 – 59.

It was Matt Guessford’s shooting that sparked Norwalk early and often, hitting five first-half three’s and finishing with 24 points for the game. The Eagles held slim leads in the fourth quarter and in the extra period, but sophomore Luke Vaske connected on big shots down the stretch to give his team the edge. The game came down to the Eagles not executive down the stretch, says Coach Larry Hessing. Levi Jungling finished with 19 points, and Jeremy Van Beek scored 11, while Mitch Fopma added 15. The Eagles’ girls led for most of the game, and had a ten point advantage going into the fourth quarter, but turnovers and a buzzer-beating bank shot triple from the outside sunk PC, 43 – 42. Natalie Vos scored a team-high 11 points in the loss. Both teams play on Thursday; the boys are at North Polk and the girls stay home to face Saydel.
