A monster effort from junior Colby Taylor allowed the Central men’s basketball team to get off to a 1 – 0 start in Iowa Conference play last night, as they blasted Luther, 88 – 74. Taylor put in a game-high 29 points and grabbed 16 rebounds to help pace their attack. The Dutch and Norse were tied at 56 with 12:30 left, before outscoring them by 14 the rest of the way. Kyle Smith scored 17 and Austin Hauser added 11 for the now 10 – 2 Central men. The women couldn’t get off the starting blocks in a 65 – 39 defeat. The Norse held Central to just ten first half points and less than 15% shooting while forcing 17 turnovers in the opening 20 minutes. Scoring warmed up a bit in the third and fourth quarters for Central, as they went 11-for-24 from the field but allowed Luther to go 13-for-36, including five three-pointers. Jessica Helton led the floor with 13 points, Emily Dine scored ten, both players came off the bench, and Jackie Kriegel had a baker’s dozen rebounds. Both teams return to conference play this Saturday in Waverly against Wartburg. Those games can be heard live on 92.1 KRLS.
