Looking just at the box score, one could easily make the assumption that the biggest thing that prevented the Pella High boys’ basketball team from defeating West Des Moines Valley on Monday was the third quarter. The Tigers outscored the Little Dutch, 32 – 9, thanks to an onslaught of eight three-pointers in the period. A benefit of playing a quality opponent such as Valley is that it allows the Pella High coaching staff to see areas where they need to still be better at moving forward so they’re at their best when postseason time comes around in February. One such “deficiency” was rebounding on Monday night. Though the Little Dutch did grab 16 offensive rebounds, nine into the hands of Ryan Van Wyk, Pella still gave up many second-chance opportunities to the Valley Tigers. Coach Mark Core hopes his Dutch can find ways to end possessions defensively more quickly after a missed shot. Their next opportunity will be a road conference game against Norwalk this Friday night, which can be heard live on 92.1 KRLS.
