The Pella Little and Lady Dutch basketball teams had their way with Dallas Center-Grimes Friday night in a home conference sweep heard live on 92.1 KRLS.

Pella’s girls scored the second-most points given up by DCG’s otherwise ruthless defense this season in their 62-47 win, and the boys corralled the Mustangs in their 67-34 blowout.

Guard Ciara Buchheit scored 14 points and snagged five boards in the first contest, and tells KNIA/KRLS Sports they learned a lot from their frustrating loss to DCG in December, and they came prepared to score.

“We were getting really good open looks, had [Katie Vander Molen] and Kiara driving to the whole which created open looks around the three,” she says.

Buchheit finished with four three-pointers. Vander Molen dropped 20 points on the Fillies, and Freshman Emily Holterhaus tacked on 10 more, and added five rebounds, three steals, and a block.

The boys played easily their best defensive game of the season. They overwhelmed the Mustangs all game long, giving up one point to DCG in the 3rd quarter, and held them to 0/12 from the field and forced nine turnovers during the period.

Junior Tyson Wassenaar says the “family”-like chemistry is only growing as the year goes on, and the guys feed on the energy of big stops against good offensive teams.

“For us, I think it was our ball pressure, and we really needed to stop some of their power players,” he says.

Will Warner finished with 14 points, 11 rebounds, and a pair of two-handed slams. Donovan Holterhaus tacked on four blocked shots, all in the second half.

Pella’s boys are 12-1 and the girls are 12-2 and face conference rival Grinnell back at their home gym Tuesday, a doubleheader that can be heard live on 92.1 KRLS.
